Watercolour and the (Un)limited Pallette

INSTRUCTOR: Gena LaCoste

The instructor will some still life elements, or you can bring photos to work from, if they’re your own photos!

Drawing tools:

  • Pencils; 2B lead or bring what works best for you

  • good eraser,

  • sketch pad

Paint: The ‘Un Limited Three Colours’  are:

  • Winsor Yellow

  • Winsor Red

  • Winsor Blue , red or green shade. The green shade is supposed to be the “true” one.

  • I urge you to acquire these for the class, or you’ll miss the point! You can find them at Swinton’s Art  in Calgary or online at Opus or Curry’s Art supplies. Please don’t buy the Cotman label (made by Winsor Newton) these are student quality paints. You want the Winsor Newton Artist’s quality paints….you won’t regret it!

Water Containers

Palette: one with a nice big mixing area is desirable. The lid off an ice cream container or a white plate even works.

Brushes:

  • Watercolour brushes have short handles and the brush itself is of animal hair (Sable) or artificial sable.

  • #12 round brush

  • #16 round and even bigger if you can find it.

  • 1” or 1 1/2” flat brush or bigger if you wish.

  • Avoid using small brushes as much as possible. Don’t let “Michael’s” sell you the wrong brushes….I find the prices and assortment @ the College Book Store, as well as the guidance to be much better.

Paper:

  • inexpensive w/c paper for experiments, the Waterford pads are nice. Watch out for Strathmore and Cotman’s pads…their paper seems to buckle and sabotage all efforts! Also avoid the paper pads being sold at Walmart.

  • better quality w/c paper (140 lb. at least, 200lb is even better). Full sheets are sold at the MHCollege Bookstore.

  • The watercolour blocks are a very good solution, but can be pricey.

Misc:

  • stretcher board

  • masking tape

  • good quality paper towels

  • White presentation folding Cardboard (backdrop) - supplied

Student Supplied:

  • Wet palette or 9x13” Tupperware with a tight fitting lid

  • Palette paper or parchment baking paper

  • Acrylic paint - please be encouraged to bring the colors you already have! For this workshop you will need to bring:

    • Red

    • Blue

    • Yellow

    • White

    • Raw or Burnt Umber

  • As a guide I would highly recommend buying the best quality you can afford, it is better to buy just a few primary colors in quality paint and learn to mix than to buy a large range of colors. I use Golden Heavy Body Acrylics. If Golden Acrylics are out of your price range I would recommend Liquitex Basics line of student grade acrylic paint. When painting florals these are my most loved colors:

    • Quinacridone Red or Naphthol Red

    • Quinacridone Magenta

    • Alizarin Crimson

    • Cadmium Yellow light

    • Yellow Ochre

    • Ultramarine Blue

    • Phthalo Blue (green shade)

    • Titanium White

    • Raw or Burnt Umber
